  • Christian History 1600 to 1699

    1683

July 14, UHERSKY BROD (Moravia - Eastern Europe) - Hungarian rebels known as Kuruc attacked the town, killing most of its Jewish inhabitants. Many of the Jews were recent refugees expelled from Vienna in 1670. One of the victims was the Rabbi and Kabbalist, Nathan Nata Hannover, who had survived the Chmielniki attacks. He was the author of Yeven MeZulah, which dealt with Chmielnicki's massacres and Sha'arei Ziyyon, a collection of prayers for Tikun Hazot. The survivors fled to Hungary. [91] (76)

    1689

Witch Burning - Of course we have all heard of the Salem Witch Hunts of 1691-1692 and the burning of a number of "witches" alive at the stake by the Puritans. But did you know that the Salem witches were all proven innocent? Of course, this was found out after they were burned. Did you also know that this witch burning, carried out all over the world to the tune of several hundred thousand dead (80% women), was initiated by the Catholic church to rid their dominion of so-called heretics and was directly related to their mandate to re-populate Europe after the Black Death or plagues of the 1300's, because their serfs were decreased by one third, thereby reducing the Church's profit by one third, since they owned about 30% of Europe's lands.[5] (77 p. 55ff) The ladies (midwives) were accused of impeding the birth rate — all birth control knowledge was vigorously erased, so much so that 20th century scholars believed birth control was a modern invention. The Inquisitors wrote, "No one is more dangerous and harmful to the Catholic faith than the midwives." (46)

May 6, PALMA DE MAJORCA - In Palma Majorica, after one hundred and fifty years of freedom from the Inquisition, an investigation led to the conviction of 219 people. All agreed to be reconciled with the Church. When they tried to flee the island 37 were burned to death, since it was considered a relapse to heresy. Among them were Raphael Benito and his sister Catalina, who, though declaring that she did not want to die, jumped into the flames rather than be baptized. Her steadfastness of belief was made into a ballad which is still sung on the island today: "She leaps into the flame. At the brink she cries, Oh brother mine, take courage your heart will not scorch." [92] (78)

    1691

The burning of a number of so-called witches in the Salem Witch Hunts of 1691 up to 1692 were all proven innocent, but only after they were already burned. Witch hunting was carried out all over the world killing several hundred thousand people, 80% of which were women, was initiated by the Catholic Church to wipe out so-called heretics. It was directly related to their mandate to repopulate Europe after the Black Death or plagues of the 1300’s after their serfs were decreased by one third which greatly reduced the Church’s profits. Most of the women were accused of impeding birth rate, usually midwives. All birth control knowledge was eradicated, so much so that 20th century scholars believed birth control was a modern invention.

The Inquisitors wrote "No one is more dangerous and harmful to the Catholic faith than the midwives."

On May 6th at Palma de Majorca, 219 people were convicted after being investigated. This happened after a hundred and fifty years of freedom from the Inquisition. All 219 people agreed to be reconciled to the Church and when they tried to flee the island, 37 were burned to death since it was considered a relapse to heresy. Among those burned to death were Raphael Benito and his sister Catalina who chose to jump into the flames rather than be baptized, despite of her fear of death. The steadfastness of her faith was made into a ballad which is still sung on the island today: "She leaps into the flame. At the brink she cries, Oh brother mine, take courage your heart will not scorch."

    1696

December 24, EVORA (Portugal) - A provincial capital of Portugal, it had been an important center for Marrano Jews. On Christmas Eve, the victims were led from the palace of the Inquisition (still existing today) to the Roman square, the most visible height of the town, where they were burned. The tribunal of Evora was infamous for its cruelty and was responsible for almost two-thirds of the Portuguese Inquisition's sentences to be burned alive, though it had far less than half the trials in Portugal.
